To
our friends and fans,
We
would like to first give thanks to our Lord, and our God for giving
us the talent and guidance to play the music that we so love.
Orquesta Borinquen has definitely arrived with our first album
"El Trombonista".
This album is dedicated to our late dear friend and great trombonist,
Mr. Jim Martinez, who passed away September
12, 2006. Also, to my late father-in-law Mr. Carmelito "Angel"
Velez, who was one of the finest human beings around. He was an
inspiriation to us, and one of the finest and most well known
cuatro players in the Bay Area. He passed away May 6, 2007, may
they both rest in peace. We were very blessed to have these two
talented musicians featured on our album.
Orquesta
Borinquen would also like to thank everyone that has supported
Orquesta Borinquen throughout the years, members past and present,
and the many venues throughout the greater San Francisco bay area
for their continued support to this day. We are humbled and honored
by the opportunity to share our music with you, and would like
to thank you for your continued support.
Most
importantly, we would like to thank our familes and loved ones
that have supported us through all of the gigs, rehearsals, and
long nights working on the album. You are all part of the foundation
that allows us to do what we do. We love you all, and we thank
you.

Orquesta
Borinquen
El Trombonista
CD (Borinquen 22196), Released 2007
Editor's Pick:
The new CD by Bay Area band Orquesta Borinquen opens
with the blistering "Descarga Borinquen", and
you can tell that the band is making a statement.
The other track titles clearly tell the story: "La Rumba
Del Bailador", "El Trombonista" and
"La Salsa De Verdad" — this is tough
old-school trombone-based salsa made with the dancer in mind.
Led
by Bill Ortega Sr., the orchestra also features singers Alberto
Diaz and Carlos Soto, Bill Ortega Jr. on timbales and trumpet,
bassist Danilo Murillo, conguero Eric Mendez amonst others.
Guest
cuatro player Carmelito Velez adds just the right touch to tracks
like "El Yerbero Del Barrio" — a gritty
classic salsa track that appeared on Roberto y su Nuevo Montuno's
'76 release on International/Fania. Most of the other compositions
were penned by pianist Marco Montoya with an ear for golden age
of Salsa.
Recommended. (BP, 2007-10-01)
